How portal linking works
Minecraft scales horizontal coordinates 8:1 between dimensions. When you enter a portal, the game converts your position (X/8, Z/8 going to the Nether) and looks for an active portal nearby: within 128 blocks in the Nether, 1024 in the Overworld (Java). If none exists, it creates one.
Fix a broken portal link
- Take your Overworld portal's X and Z and divide by 8 (round to whole numbers).
- In the Nether, break the wrongly linked portal and build a new one at exactly those coordinates.
- Re-light it and re-enter from the Overworld side. The link is now 1:1.
